Jane

I woke up early the next morning a mixed bag of emotions. Never in my life had I felt so broken and lost as I did right after leaving James.

I’d come back to Holly Springs to regroup. I felt somewhat better, but sometimes it was still hard to get up and get moving. After forcing myself through the routine of showering and dressing, I went downstairs and sat in front of my dad’s TV.

There was nothing for me. No job to go to, no errands to run. Just me, and time. I thought about calling Oliver but decided against it. Not as much decided, so much as I couldn’t stand the fact that I was becoming so dependent on others.

Plus the parade and tree decorating were tonight. I was sure Angie was going to be keeping him busy.

The interview that Cynthia had set up was the next day. I wanted to call her again to see if she had any tips on the company’s interview process. I picked up my phone but when I turned on the screen, there was a missed call. The number wasn’t saved, but it was familiar. The call was from my ex-husband.

Maybe it was an accident. Or maybe he was looking for something of his and thought I had it. Maybe he had something of mine and wanted to return it.

I kept trying to bury the possibility that he was calling to reconcile under a pile of maybes. But the maybes quickly ran out and I had to face the slim possibility that he wanted me to take him back.

The idea made me laugh. To have him call me and ask for forgiveness would be nice, but I knew it would never happen. James was a lawyer and always found it easy to argue himself out of being at fault no matter the situation.

Our divorce was probably a blip on the radar of his life. The thought of him moving on without any regret or guilt stung. It stung enough to get me moving.

So what? I was divorced, but I was divorced from an awful man. He had lied, cheated, and manipulated in every aspect of his life. That was all he knew. It’s who he was.

Why had I wasted so much energy mourning the ending of our relationship? He wasn’t worth it. I stood up from the couch, grabbed my coat and gloves, and left the house in my less than presentable but comfortable clothes.

It was freezing outside but that didn’t matter. I had built up a reservoir of energy that I needed to burn through. Dad’s car was still in the driveway but I walked past it and headed for Main Street.

Today was the parade and I knew they needed help. I marched past lawns covered in inflatable snowmen and Santas accompanied by Christmas music coming from nearly every house. When I got to Main Street it was the perfect culmination of my holiday journey. Banners and lights, music and the tree. It all reminded me that I needed to quit the pity party.
